98 Abingdon Road is a large 4 storey Victorian house on a busy city access route. Many of the adjoining houses have been converted to bedsits or small guest houses.  The clients, both young professionals, wanted to make a large spacious room on the top floor, away from the noise of the road and with views over the meadows and playing fields along the Thames.

The planners would not countenance any change in the façade – but additional light was brought in from the rear through high level rooflights.

The front façade was largely rebuilt from the 1st floor upwards – using matching hand made brick and cast stone details.

The roof was in a sad state and the effects of gravity over 100 years on an old roof, required a complete restructuring with substantial steel work. The front of the house had also deteriorated significantly and was falling gradually into the street. From the road the house has weathered back into its terrace façade quite quickly and the space inside is magnificent – it just awaits time and funds to achieve its full potential. In the meantime it has secured the property for at least another 100 years – and is probably serving to prop up the houses on either side!
