The
clients are successful local business people, and just the type
of clientele for which the house was built in 1899, as designed
by H.W.Moore.
But
since then little had been done to the house apart from
converting it into separate rooms for rent.

A
new kitchen/dining/ family room was created leading on to the rear
garden. This left space for an internal courtyard acting as a
lightwell and lung for the surrounding rooms. All this was done within a
Permitted Development envelope – but with due care and attention to
the neighbour’s views and rights of light. |
| Mr.&
Mrs. Gill wanted to do away with the clutter and return the house to
being spacious and practical family home for their young family. This
required a wholesale refurbishment including all the plumbing,
electrics, windows, doors and floors. The ground floor was opened up
from front to back and new full height cupboards created along the
length of the hall.

The
scale of the property and the blend of traditional materials (2nd hand
brick, clay tiles, limestone flooring and Douglas Fir) has
resulted in an elegant extension which combines well with the scale and
spaces of the existing house. Particularly successful are the views to
the garden – which run through the house. |
