The south side of Frenchay Road, designed by the
architect H.W.Moore, was built for modest tradesmen. The present
owners, an academic author and a university counsellor, wanted
to extend and open up their house, which had been largely
unchanged for 95 years.

|
The
extensive glazing to the South side is tucked under a generous
overhang - so as to reduce summer overheating. The frame was too
large to be taken in - so it had to be assembled in situ. The
glazing is low-e coated to reduce heat loss and to meet Building
Regulation targets. |
| The solution is similar to that adopted at Hill
Top Road - to extend out the rear on the ground floor to create
a large top-lit kitchen/dining room. The old kitchen was
stripped out and converted into a utility shower area and the
bathroom above was refurbished.

As the site is in the North Oxford conservation
area, materials had to be carefully chosen to match the existing
buildings and the extension could be no more than 50 cubic
metres. This was achieved by incorporating the existing
outhouses and maintaining the roof profile. Sashes with crown
glass were restored to the original house. |
