The clients are mathematicians with a young family, who wanted more room from their new house.  The extension adjoins the kitchen to provide a spacious dining/sitting area and opens up views over the garden to give a horizontal vista.

They were missing the wide, open spaces and warmth of Texas and wished to break out of the Victorian mode of living, while staying within the rich North Oxford tradition. The purpose-built, high-level windows on the side lend a lightness to the construction and accentuate the sense of space. The pillar supports the existing 1st floor extension above.
